The Robinair 34888HD is built for shops that service high-capacity R-134a mobile air conditioning systems, including the larger systems found in buses and heavy trucks. Robinair rates it for both small and large mobile A/C systems, and the hardware that makes the larger end of that workload practical is a removable external tank, a liquid pump and 18 foot service hoses that reach across a bay without repositioning the machine.
For a normal service cycle the machine can recover refrigerant, evacuate the system, run a vacuum leak test and recharge to the programmed amount without the technician working panel valves. Oil pulled out during recovery drains into a graduated container so the amount removed is visible, and oil can be injected back during charging. Charging can be routed through the high side, the low side or both.
This is a dedicated R-134a machine. If your shop needs R-1234yf or mixed refrigerant coverage from the same service station, this is the wrong machine for that job. Its case is strongest where R-134a is still a regular part of the service mix and refrigerant loads are large enough to justify the external tank setup.

Switch Tanks During Large-System Recovery Work
The removable external tank matters most when servicing larger mobile A/C systems or running multiple recoveries back to back. Rather than tying the machine to a small fixed internal cylinder, the tank can be swapped as the workload requires. Robinair also equips the 34888HD with a liquid pump for larger-system service.
Run Recovery Through Recharge as One Programmed Sequence
The automatic function carries the machine through recovery, vacuum, vacuum leak testing and charging after the technician enters the service parameters, with no panel valves to operate. The vacuum stage defaults to 15 minutes and is programmable up to 99 minutes, with remaining time on the display. Visual and audible alerts signal when service is complete or the machine needs attention.
Leak Test With Nitrogen or Forming Gas
A dedicated nitrogen port lets the 34888HD pressurize an A/C system with N2 or N2H2 for leak testing, and the machine monitors system pressure for decay during an N2 test. N2H2 testing is used with a compatible leak detector. The gas supply and leak detection kit are separate purchases.
Replace Oil Based on What Was Actually Removed
Recovered oil drains into a graduated container so the technician can see how much came out of the system. In automatic mode, if no additional oil amount is entered, the machine injects the same amount it recovered. More oil can be programmed when the service procedure calls for it.
Choose the Charge Path for the System
Charging can be routed through the high side, the low side or both sides. That leaves the technician free to follow the vehicle manufacturer's service procedure instead of forcing every system through one fixed charging path.
Air Purge and Refrigerant Tracking Are Built Into the Workflow
The automatic air purge function removes system-damaging air from the refrigerant circuit without the technician monitoring gauges or opening purge valves. The refrigerant management system tracks refrigerant recovered, charged and replenished, and monitors remaining filter life so the shop is not guessing at filter condition.

Installation Requirements
Check the Power and Work Area Before Ordering
The 34888HD runs on 125 VAC, 60 Hz and draws 1380 W, so a standard grounded 120 V shop circuit carries it. Robinair instructs the operator to use a properly grounded outlet and to position the machine so the plug and power switch stay accessible, with the rear fan vents unobstructed.
The machine should sit on an even surface with the front wheels locked during operation. Robinair also specifies mechanical ventilation providing at least four air changes per hour when working with refrigerant.
Robinair advises against using an extension cord. If one is unavoidable, the manual specifies the shortest practical cord with a minimum conductor size of 14 AWG.
Nitrogen Testing Requires Additional Equipment
Using the N2 or N2H2 leak test function requires a separate gas supply and a compatible leak detection kit, neither of which ships with the machine. Robinair specifies a regulator output of 6 to 9.5 bar, not to be exceeded, and requires N2H2 mixtures to hold hydrogen content below 5%. The supply connects to a 1/4 inch flare fitting per SAE J513.
Compressed air must never be substituted for N2 or N2H2 when pressure testing an R-134a system.
Plan for Activation and Filter Replacement
The machine must be registered and activated within 30 days of first startup or it locks out, so build activation into the install rather than leaving it for later.
The filter is rated for 300 lb (136 kg) of refrigerant and the machine tracks actual throughput against that rating. It warns once 200 lb has been filtered and locks the affected function when the full 300 lb is reached, so the replacement filter, Robinair No. 34724, is a planned consumable rather than a surprise. Vacuum pump oil is changed at the same time as the filter. Robinair also calls for daily inspection of the power cord and hoses and monthly checks of scale calibration, casters and wheels, and the machine for leaks.
