Norco 2000 lb Gear Driven Engine Stand (78230)
You've got a big-block or a diesel long-block on the crane and nowhere solid to put it. A standard stand fights you the whole way, and rotating a fully dressed engine by hand turns into a two-person job. The Norco 2000 lb gear driven engine stand solves that. It's a twin-post design rated at 2,000 lbs, built for automobile, light-duty truck, and medium-duty truck engines and transmissions.
Here's what sets this 2000 lb engine stand apart from the pack. The 75:1 ratio gearbox. You crank a hand lever and the 360-degree rotating head turns to exactly where you want it, no straining, no fighting the weight. That gear drive is the whole reason to reach for this over a cheaper unit. The 78230 is the improved version of the 78200, and that 75:1 gear box is what makes turning the heaviest engines effortless.
This is a heavy duty engine stand meant for shops that work on real iron. Two rigid rear wheels keep it planted, and one of the two front swivel casters locks for maximum stability. Polyurethane wheels roll clean over tile and epoxy floors without chewing them up. Twin universal mounting plates telescope for fine adjustment when you're mounting the ends or sides of an engine, and they open up to 36-1/4 inches apart to swallow larger blocks.
If you want a gear drive engine stand that turns a diesel like it's a four-banger, this is the one to put in the bay. We stock Norco professional lifting equipment, know the adapter options cold, and back every order with direct phone support so you get the right setup the first time.

Installation & Setup
Assembly is straightforward and the manual walks you through it with an exploded-view drawing. You'll build out the base, attach the wheels and locking caster, mount the gear housing upright, and install the handle lever onto the worm gear. From there the mounting plate receiver slides onto the drive shaft and the adapter arms bolt into the mounting plates.
When you mount an engine, get the center of balance within one inch of the stand's rotational axis, then torque all mounting hardware to 75 ft-lbs. Use grade 5 or metric grade 8.8 cap screws or better for all mounting hardware, and make sure thread engagement runs at least 1-1/2 times the bolt diameter. Always work on a hard, level surface, and never exceed the rated capacity.
Consult the engine manufacturer for proper mounting locations and center of balance before you lift. Position the adapter arms as far apart as practical in the mounting plate slots for maximum supporting strength.
Heavy Duty Engine Stand Applications
Full engine rebuilds where you need to rotate the block to reach every bolt, seal, and pan without wrestling the weight by hand.
Built for light-duty and medium-duty truck engines, this heavy duty diesel engine stand handles the mass of a dressed diesel long-block with the gear drive doing the work.
Twin mounting plates and eight adjustable arms let you secure oddball blocks and transmissions by the ends or the sides.
A gear driven rotating engine stand that keeps heavy powerplants stable and positioned so your techs move through jobs faster.
Model Comparison
Both stands in this family carry the same 2,000 lb capacity, and every optional engine mounting adapter fits either model. The difference is how the head turns.
| Model | Capacity | Head Rotation Drive |
|---|---|---|
| 78200 | 2,000 lbs. | Standard rotation |
| 78230 | 2,000 lbs. | 75:1 gear box, hand crank |
If you regularly turn heavy engines, the 78230 gear drive is the upgrade that pays for itself in effort saved. Same footprint, same capacity, far less muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size engines can this stand handle?
The 78230 is rated at 2,000 lbs and is built for automobile, light-duty truck, and medium-duty truck engines and transmissions. Keep the engine's center of balance within one inch of the rotational axis and never exceed the rated capacity.
What does the 75:1 gear ratio actually do for me?
The 75:1 gearbox is activated by a hand crank and turns the 360-degree rotating head to any work position with very little effort. It's what lets you rotate a heavy dressed engine smoothly instead of fighting the weight by hand.
How is the 78230 different from the 78200?
Both share the same 2,000 lb capacity and accept all the same optional mounting adapters. The 78230 adds the 75:1 gear box, which makes turning the heaviest engines effortless. The 78200 uses standard rotation.
How far apart do the mounting plates adjust?
The two universal mounting plates can be adjusted up to 36-1/4 inches apart. The rotating shaft telescopes inside the post receiver for fine adjustment when you're mounting the ends or sides of an engine.
What comes with the stand?
You get two universal mounting plates, the rotating shaft, eight fully adjustable adapter arms, the 75:1 gearbox with hand crank, and all related mounting hardware.
What hardware and torque does mounting require?
Use grade 5 or metric grade 8.8 cap screws or better for all mounting hardware, with thread engagement of at least 1-1/2 times the bolt diameter. Torque all mounting hardware to 75 ft-lbs once the engine and adapter arms are correctly positioned.
Will it damage my shop floor?
No. The polyurethane wheels are made to protect tile and epoxy floors. Two rigid rear wheels and a locking front swivel caster keep the stand stable while you work.
Does it meet any safety standards?
Yes. The 78230 meets ASME PASE performance and safety standards. Always use it on a hard, level surface and inspect it before each use.
What are the assembled dimensions and weight?
The stand is 42 inches tall, 21.25 inches wide at the front and 40 inches at the rear, with a length that extends from 38.25 to 53.25 inches. Shipping weight is 315 lbs.
How does it ship?
It ships free to the lower 48 as a freight shipment. Contact us before ordering if you need a delivery window, residential delivery, or liftgate service so we can confirm the setup and any accessorial charges.
