20 Ton Hydraulic Press - American Forge & Foundry 850ASD Super Duty

If you're pressing wheel bearings, punching out worn bushings, or straightening bent shafts on a regular basis, you need a press that actually keeps up with the workload. The American Forge & Foundry 850ASD is a hydraulic press 20 ton rated, fully welded H-frame unit built for real automotive, fleet, and industrial shop use - not the kind that sits in a corner gathering dust. Fully welded construction means no flex under load, and the 7.5" stroke gives you serious working range in a compact 35" wide footprint that won't eat your floor space.

The double pump air motor is what separates this from a basic manual press. You're not cranking a handle to build pressure all day. Hook up your shop air, step on the foot control valve, and the ram moves - fast enough to noticeably speed up your workflow. When you need more precision for a tight press fit, you can switch to the manual handle for slower, more controlled movement. The glycerin-filled gauge shows you exactly how much force you're applying in real time, so you're never guessing and never overloading the work piece. Overload protection is built in as a backup.

Seven bed height positions give this heavy duty shop press the flexibility to handle everything from small components to larger assemblies without fighting the setup every time. The lateral head adjuster shifts the press head side to side across a wider working range - you move the head to the work, not the other way around. A shatter-resistant polycarbonate shield comes standard on the entire ASD series, putting a real barrier between you and whatever might let go under pressure. This is a 20 ton h-frame industrial heavy duty floor shop press that's thought through from an operator's perspective, not just spec'd on paper.

It ships free to the lower 48, and we carry the full AFF Super Duty line. Have questions before you order? Call us directly at (855) 498-2147.

What's Included

The 850ASD ships ready to work. These 20 ton hydraulic press accessories mean you're pressing on day one, not ordering add-ons after the fact.

  • AFF 850ASD 20 Ton Super Duty Press
  • 2 pc press plate set
  • 10 pc pin and bearing press adapter set
  • Shatter-resistant polycarbonate shield (installed)
  • Glycerin-filled pressure gauge (installed)
  • Foot-operated air control valve

Installation & Setup

The 850ASD ships partially disassembled for transport. Assembly involves attaching the foot sections and support legs to the connecting plates, threading the pressure gauge assembly into the gauge fitting until tight, and repositioning the pump assembly to the outside of the leg. All hardware is included. Plan on two or more people for assembly - and any time you need to raise or lower the press bed, the bed is heavy enough that 2 to 3 people is the recommended minimum.

Before First Use

Anchor the press to the floor with anchor bolts before operating. The floor surface must be firm, level, and rated to handle the load. Before first use, add a teaspoon of quality air tool lubricant into the air supply inlet, connect your air line, and run the pump for about 3 seconds to distribute it through the system. Check the hydraulic oil level at the filler plug on top of the reservoir and top off with quality hydraulic jack oil if needed. Do not use brake fluid or mix different oil types.

Air Supply Requirements

The press runs on shop air at 109 - 123 PSI (0.75 - 0.85 MPa) connected via a standard NPT 1/4" fitting. Purge air from the hydraulic system before first use by opening the release valve counterclockwise and cycling the foot control valve several times. For precision work, the manual handle gives you slower, more controlled ram movement than the air motor. Always monitor the pressure gauge and stay within the 20 ton rated capacity.

Applications

The 850ASD is built for any shop environment where pressing force needs to be controlled, repeatable, and fast. Here's where it earns its floor space.

Automotive & Truck Repair

Press wheel bearings, ball joints, u-joints, and control arm bushings without sending work out to a dealer or specialty shop. This is the core use case for an automotive hydraulic press - and the 7-position bed handles most suspension and drivetrain jobs without a custom fixture fight every time.

Fleet & Equipment Maintenance

Keep pins, bushings, and seals moving on heavy equipment without the downtime of farming it out. The lateral head adjuster and 10 pc adapter set give you enough range to work through a variety of component sizes in a single session.

Fabrication & Machine Shops

Press, size, rivet, and form small metal components with consistent, measurable force. The gauge takes the guesswork out of precision assemblies where overloading the part isn't an option. Use the manual handle when you need to go slow.

Commercial & Home Garage Use

Whether it's a busy commercial garage or a well-equipped home shop, this garage hydraulic press gives you professional-grade pressing capability in a 35" wide footprint. A proper automotive hydraulic shop press without the large-format floor commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What air supply does the 850ASD require?

The 850ASD requires shop air at 109 to 123 PSI (0.75 to 0.85 MPa) connected via a standard NPT 1/4" fitting. Most shop compressors capable of running air tools will handle this. Before first use, purge air from the hydraulic system by opening the release valve counterclockwise and cycling the foot control valve several times with the air supply connected.

What adapter sets and accessories are included?

The 850ASD includes a 2 pc press plate set and a 10 pc pin and bearing press adapter set, so you're ready for a wide range of pressing applications right out of the box. Each adapter in the set has its own maximum rated capacity based on its size - never use an adapter beyond its individual rating, regardless of the press's 20 ton rating.

Does this press need to be anchored to the floor?

Yes. The manual requires anchoring the press to the floor with anchor bolts before operation. The surface must be firm, level, dry, and capable of sustaining the full press load. Floor anchoring is a safety requirement, not optional. Only operate the press on a stable, level surface with adequate lighting.

How does the bed height adjustment work on the 850ASD?

The 850ASD has 7 bed height positions adjusted manually using a pin-and-circlip system. To change the height, firmly support the press bed on both sides, remove the rear circlips from all four press bed pins, pull the pins, reposition the bed to the desired height, and reinsert all four pins completely before reattaching the circlips. The bed is heavy - plan on 2 to 3 people for this task. The cable winch adjustment found on the 50, 75, and 100 ton models is not included on the 20 ton.

What does the warranty cover and how long does it last?

American Forge & Foundry provides a one-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship to the final purchaser. If a defect is confirmed, AFF will repair or replace the unit at no charge when shipped prepaid with proof of purchase to AFF or an authorized Field Service Depot. The warranty does not cover damage from accident, overload, abuse, or use with unauthorized attachments.
