AFF 549SD - American Forge & Foundry 80/50 Ton 2 Stage Air Hydraulic Axle Jack
Putting a jack under a semi, a combine, or a piece of heavy construction equipment isn't the moment to wonder if your equipment has enough capacity. The AFF 549SD is an American Forge & Foundry axle jack that delivers 80 tons on the first stage and 50 tons on the second - one unit that covers heavy-duty trucking, agricultural equipment, construction machinery, military vehicles, and aircraft. That's not a marketing claim about versatility. That's two lifting stages in one body, each rated for the kind of load that puts lesser axle jacks out of their range.
The piston head seal borrows from industrial sealing technology - the same design used in heavy manufacturing presses, not consumer-grade equipment. You get a stronger hold at both low and high pressure, which matters when you're keeping serious weight off the ground for extended periods. Double polished chromed pistons maintain tighter tolerances than standard machining allows, which cuts down on oil bypassing and protects the ram from scoring over time. The single-piece base adds genuine stability - there are no bolted joints to flex or shift when the load is at its heaviest.
The 54-inch handle locks at three positions so you can work into a tight spot without repositioning yourself around the vehicle. Integral Descent Metering keeps the load coming down controlled and steady - this is not a valve you hope holds. Air-assisted ram retraction brings you back to low height faster between lifts. The built-in overload safety valve shuts things down before an excessive load can damage the unit. Every one of these features answers a real failure mode on inferior hydraulic axle jacks.
AFF tested this pneumatic hydraulic axle jack from -13F to +113F (-25C to +45C) and ran off-center loading tests to confirm performance under real field conditions. Cold shop in January or outdoor fieldwork in July - the 549SD is rated for both. Free shipping to the lower 48 means no freight bill shows up after checkout. Real support is one call away when you need it.

Installation & Setup
The 549SD runs on compressed air. Before your first lift, confirm your shop air supply falls within the rated range and get familiar with the handle and extension setup.
Air Pressure Requirement: The unit requires shop air between 116 and 174 psi (0.8 to 1.2 MPa). Operating below 116 psi will affect lifting performance. Pressures above 174 psi are outside the rated operating range - do not exceed.
Air Connection for Lowering: Air-assisted lowering is built in. Keep the air supply connected when lowering - this controls ram retraction speed and is part of the Integral Descent Metering system.
Handle Positioning: The 54-inch handle locks in 3 positions. No tools required to change positions. Select the lock position that gives you the best reach based on clearance under the vehicle before you begin positioning the jack.
Extension Setup: Two extensions are included - 75 mm (3") and 45 mm (1.75"). Attach to the saddle before positioning the jack if your application requires additional height range. The saddle adapter is also included and should be used when the load contact surface requires it.
Applications
The 549SD covers the high-capacity end of the axle jacks spectrum. Here's where this unit is built to work and why it's the right fit for each application.
Semi trucks, tandem-axle rigs, and heavy haulers push standard service jacks past their capacity limits. The 80-ton first stage gives you the room to work safely on full-loaded configurations without wondering about the margin.
Combines, large tractors, and bulk ag equipment carry a weight that most shop jacks never see. The 549SD handles the load and is rated through the temperature extremes where field maintenance actually happens.
Excavators, graders, and heavy construction equipment need a stable lift with no play under load. The single-piece base construction keeps this american forge and foundry air jack planted even on imperfect staging surfaces.
Military maintenance environments are rarely ideal. The 549SD's cold-weather rating, heat rating, and off-center load testing make it appropriate for the kind of conditions military vehicle maintenance actually involves.
Aircraft work requires controlled, predictable lifts. Integral Descent Metering keeps the load lowering at a steady, controlled rate - no sudden movement when you're working around landing gear or structural components.
High-volume shops running mixed fleets benefit from one pneumatic axle jack that covers the full weight range. The 549SD handles the heavy end so you're not moving between multiple units across different vehicle classes.
American Forge & Foundry Jack Lineup - Model Comparison
AFF makes a range of axle jacks and service jacks to fit different capacity needs. The 549SD is the top of the Super Duty line. If your application calls for less capacity, here's how the models stack up so you can confirm you're ordering the right unit.
| Model | Capacity | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3130 | 10 Ton | Heavy Duty Service Jack |
| Model 522SD | 22 Ton | Super Duty Truck Jack |
| Model 544 | 44 Ton | Super Duty Jack |
| Model 549SD (This Unit) | 80/50 Ton - 2 Stage | Super Duty Air/Hydraulic Axle Jack |
The american forge and foundry 22 ton jack (Model 522SD) and the AFF 544 44-ton air hydraulic axle jack are solid choices for shops that don't need the full 80-ton capacity. The american forge and foundry 10 ton jack (Model 3130) is a better fit for lighter service work. Not sure which model fits your fleet? Call (855) 498-2147 and we'll point you in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What air pressure does the AFF 549SD require to operate?
The 549SD requires a compressed air supply between 116 and 174 psi (0.8 to 1.2 MPa). Operating below 116 psi will affect lifting performance. Pressures above 174 psi are outside the rated operating range and should not be used. Most industrial shop air systems run comfortably within this range.
How high can the 549SD reach with the included extensions attached?
With both included extensions installed, Stage 1 (80 ton) reaches a maximum height of 19.14 inches, and Stage 2 (50 ton) reaches a maximum of 23.07 inches. Two extensions are included out of the box - a 75 mm (3") extension and a 45 mm (1.75") extension - along with a saddle adapter.
Is the 549SD rated for cold weather or outdoor use?
Yes. AFF tests this unit from -13F to +113F (-25C to +45C) and includes off-center load testing to confirm performance under real-world conditions. It's built and rated for cold shop environments as well as outdoor fieldwork across that full temperature range.
What does the one-year warranty cover and how do I make a claim?
The one-year limited warranty covers operating defects in material and workmanship. If a defect is identified during the warranty period, AFF will repair or replace the unit at no charge. To make a claim, ship the unit prepaid with proof of purchase to American Forge & Foundry or to an authorized Field Service Depot. The warranty does not cover damage from overload, accident, abuse, or unauthorized modifications. Call (855) 498-2147 with questions about warranty service.
